If you feel like the ground is shifting under your feet this week, you aren’t imagining it. From a landmark Supreme Court ruling to Amazon’s new barcode headache, the “cost of doing business” just got a lot noisier.
The Tariff “Ping-Pong”: SCOTUS vs. White House
The biggest story of the week is the total overhaul of U.S. import costs. On Friday (Feb 20), the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the administration’s use of emergency powers (IEEPA) to impose broad tariffs was unconstitutional. For a few hours, it looked like the “trade war” was over. It wasn’t.
- The Pivot: By Tuesday (Feb 24), the White House invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to slap a 10% global baseline tariff back on almost all imports.
- The 15% Threat: While the rate is currently 10%, the President has already signaled he may hike it to the 15% legal maximum to “compensate” for the court’s interference.
- The De Minimis Death: Crucially, the $800 duty-free exemption remains suspended. Even small e-commerce parcels now face the 10% surcharge plus formal entry fees.
- Bottom Line: Your landed costs are a moving target. The 10% rate is the new floor, but with a 150-day expiration on this specific legal authority, expect another cliff-edge in July.
The “Agentic” Shift in Hiring
A major report this week signals that AI is moving from “talking” to “doing.”
First, Gartner released a survey (Feb 25) showing that 55% of supply chain leaders expect “Agentic AI” to reduce entry-level hiring. These aren’t just chatbots; they are autonomous agents capable of re-routing shipments and drafting purchase orders. While entry-level roles may vanish, 86% of leaders admit they need a total overhaul of their talent pipelines to find people capable of managing these bots.
Amazon’s New Barcode Mandate (March 31)
For resellers, the “invisible tax” of doing business on Amazon just went up. Starting March 31, 2026, non-Brand Registry sellers will be forced to use Amazon-specific barcodes for all FBA shipments, even if the products have manufacturer barcodes.
- The Risk: Inbound shipments without these stickers will be flagged as “defective,” leading to immediate fees.
- The Strategy: If you’re a wholesaler, audit your 3PL prep workflows now.
TikTok’s Surprising Maturity
The “TikTok trinket” era is officially over in the UK. New data shows that items priced above £100 generated a staggering 41% of UK revenue on TikTok Shop last month. This is 15x higher than the global average.
While UK shoppers are buying high-ticket items directly in-app, a separate Forbes report (Feb 23) notes that TikTok is also acting as a massive “demand engine” for Amazon. In many markets, viral discovery on TikTok is driving a secondary wave of search traffic directly to Amazon listings. Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, the hierarchy has flipped: TikTok Shop slightly outpaced Shopee in GMV during the Lunar New Year rush.
Trade & Infrastructure
- Steel Costs: The EU entered trilogue negotiations on Tuesday (Feb 24) to slash tariff-free steel import quotas by 47% and double out-of-quota duties to 50%. If you sell metal-heavy goods, your European landed costs are about to surge.
- Rail Freight: The UK just secured a £15M deal (Feb 25) to revive cross-Channel rail freight at the Barking Eurohub. This offers a greener, high-capacity alternative to traditional trucking for bulk goods.
- Meta’s Hardware Move: Meta announced a massive shift to AMD chips on Tuesday (Feb 24) to power its AI infrastructure. This multi-billion dollar bet is what fuels the machine-learning behind your Advantage+ ad campaigns.
Tech Volatility
The legal landscape for your tech stack remains unstable. A federal judge just dismissed the OpenAI vs. xAI trade secrets lawsuit (Feb 25), though xAI has until March 17 to refile. Meanwhile, Japan’s antitrust watchdog raided Microsoft’s Tokyo offices on Wednesday over concerns regarding its cloud practices and Azure’s dominance.
Bottom line: In a week where the EU, Japan, and the major AI players are all shifting the rules, “platform agnosticism” is your best defense.
Stay nimble. See you next week.
